Catalog Pick: Enameled Ceiling Light

Those of us living the 8 ft. ceiling life always appreciate a good close-to-ceiling fixture. Especially since they tend to be few and far between. Sure there are decent ones out there...but it's rare to find a ceiling light that is actually exciting.

But I found one!

Look at this beauty - the Classic Dome Enameled Ceiling Light from (my favorite) Shades of Light:

This is a worthy fixture. Imagine hanging several down the ceiling of a galley kitchen. Or a foyer. They are so simple but the rich color really makes them feel deliberate and not an afterthought.

And, the best part, is they are just over $100. Win.

They come in several colors paired with either pewter, chrome, or brass. Check them out here...

Catalog Pick: Brass Sconce Under $120

Brass sconces of the swing-arm variety have become a design darling, and with good reason. I feel like we are always on the hunt for good ones, yes?

I just came across one that is on point. Especially the price point. Because it's really attractive and under $120. The Adjustable Arm 1-Light Wall Sconce from Shades of Light in Warm Brass:

Now, that is a good-looking light. It looks way more expensive than $118. Usually when you hover around $100, these lights don't look quite so chic so you tend to pass on them (at least I do). But I think this one has the design factor and a great price tag.

If you need some visual reminders about the power of this fixture:

The scale of the fixtures in that iconic bathroom above is not the same scale as these I'm showing you...but you get the idea. Brass sconces are good.

Catalog Pick: PB Kids Paige Pendant

I think most of us are in the know that PB Kids often has some sweet lighting appropriate for non-kid installations, yes? My recent favorite is this Paige Pendant. That milk glass + metal look is so chic and could suit several styles. I would personally love a pair of these hanging over a kitchen island.

In other PB Kids lighting news...this Geo Multilight Pendant:

The perfect statement light fixture for your foyer.

Tiny Sconce

Rebecca de Ravenel via Chinoiserie Chic

Did y'all catch this image on Chinoiserie Chic last week? If so, excuse the recycle, but I just had to point out one element. One tee-tiny element. That wee sconce.

Let's also note the imbalance of how the art and sconce are hung. I pretty much never measure when I hang things on walls and I feel good about that corner-cutting when I see arrangements like this. It might hurt your eyeballs, but it works just fine for me.

But back to that that petite pink sconce. It makes the vignette for me. It's diminutive size actually calls attention to it...and that pink shade is brilliant. I love using wall lighting - even if it's more for aesthetics than actual lighting...but you know that little thing casts a lovely soft glow when left on at night.

The Leafy Chandelier

Luxury lighting purveyor - Colleen and Company - has caught my eye once again. Say hello to the Leafy Chandelier:

Whimsical, sophisticated and drop dead gorgeous. And though the price firmly puts it out of my realm of possibility, this is the kind of fixture that would carry a room. Imagine white walls, simple wood furnishings, and that blush fixture in a nursery. Yes, please.

Have you seen this fixture used in any room photography recently? Would love to see it in situ.

Lamp Goals

I can't get this lamp out of my head. Due to the luxurious price and my 0% need for it, it will not be coming into my life but, as I always say, the next best thing to getting it is sharing it with you.

LOVE the bamboo nod without being overly bambooey. But that blue color is what is spectacular and different. It's just such a lovely hue that would set off any room. A pair of these flanking a dresser would be insane. Or just one on a nightstand would make me happy.

I literally have been thinking about it for weeks. Does that happen to you? Lamps don't leave your mind and thoughts? This is the world I live in.

If you have a 100% need for a beautiful blue lamp it's on OKL here...and if you buy it, please tell me about it.

Top 12 Flush Mount Lights Roundup

Mac's nursery calls for a flush mount ceiling light. In the past, I have dreaded the search for such a fixture because the options I found were usually pretty terrible...especially in any kind of reasonable price point.

Enter Shades of Light, my favorite lighting (and then some) retailer in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Perusing through Shades of Light's catalog many years ago was one of my first introductions to the world of good-looking ceiling lights.

So knowing I was on the hunt for a fixture, I reached out to my friend Walter at SOL to see if they might want to partner with me on this post and they said yes. Win! So I'm rounding up my favorite ceiling lights to share with y'all while also giving one of my favorite retailers a shout-out.

Introducing my top 12 good-looking flush mount light fixtures from Shades of Light:

1. Stepped Deco Flush Mount - Simple and handsome, but not boring.

2. Modern Opal Glass Globe Semi-Flush Light - This is THE light fixture to pair with a traditional, wallpapered foyer.

3. Classic Americana Semi-Flush Ceiling Light - Clean and classic - great for kitchens and bathrooms.

4. Scalloped Shade Semi-Flush Ceiling Light - Run, don't walk, to get this one. The price point is great and it's so delightful...not to mention embellishable.

5. Silver Bamboo Square Ceiling Light - Always say yes to bamboo lighting.

6. Metal Star Ceiling Light - This one could go so many ways! I especially like it for a masculine space.

7. Extra Large Olive Leaf Ceiling Chandelier - Drama for your ceiling.

8. Crystal Jewel Ceiling Light - Glamour for your ceiling.

9. Flower Drum Shade Ceiling Light - Love the contrast of the black trim - traditional and tailored.

10. Crystal Flowers Ceiling Light - This was my first flush mount and I love it. We put it in a hallway and it's just the prettiest.

11. Kensington Ceiling Light - I particularly like the antique brass paired with a brass-accented space...like a kitchen with brass pulls or a built-in study with brass hardware.

12. Small Interlocking Rings Flush Mount Light - A wonderfully easy choice at the perfect price.

Doing this roundup with the SOL team helped me narrow in on my choice for Mac's room...do you know which one I picked?? I would love to hear guesses.

I wish I had time to do roundups like this all the time. They are fun and I'm hoping helpful. Thank you to Walter, Danielle and Fran at Shades of Light for helping me pull this together!

Catalog Picks: Gilt at Wisteria

Just received a fresh Wisteria catalog and was perusing to pick something out to share with y'all but I couldn't decide among several items - all of which have a gorgeous gilded finish.

Disclaimer - two of these are out of stock (SO annoying Wisteria! If you send the catalog, make sure you have some stock!) but they are set to return so you can still purchase if you aren't in a rush.

Hands-down, my favorite is that egg table. It is so unique and completely lovely. I would pile it high with decorating books and candlesticks and all the things I can no longer put out in the open with sticky fingers around.

Second is the lantern because it's lines are so good but a little different than the typical lantern. LOVE the finish. And I think it looks really fancy/pricey even though it has an expensive-but-not-too-bad price tag.

And who doesn't love a solid gold mirror? Completely classic and timeless and versatile as a vertical or horizontal situation.

I will point out the obvious that these would all look very pretty in the same space. You're welcome for that tip.

DIY Brass Sconce

Did you notice I didn't blog last week? Oopsies. Crazy busy week and then I took off Thursday for the Bahamas with my work team. It was amazing. And needed. And now I'm back with a slight tan and slightly clearer brain.

So let's get back to it with an adorable IKEA hack that I'm planning to swipe for myself. Have you seen this precious little girl's room from blog Dwellings by DeVore? Completely adorable.

And though the room and gallery wall are really cute, I'm completely focused on the hack of that IKEA sconce as I'm always on the hunt for an inexpensive, good-looking sconce and I think this one fits the bill. It's the RODD Wall Lamp - the bad news is I don't think you can get it online. Boo.

But a little gold spray paint and cool lamp shade go a long way here. Perfectly sweet in this space but you could reimagine the shade several ways and use it in a grown-up way.

Read more details on the hack and the space here...

Red Pagoda Lantern Under $200

Starting your week with a hot tip for an amazing red pagoda lantern that I spotted on zulily over the weekend:

And it's under $200! It's also big coming in at 32" in height. TOTAL showstopper in any room if your ceilings can handle it.

If you're a parent, you're likely a zulily shopper, but if you aren't, you can join here:

www.zulily.com/invite/pagodalantern

It's a flash sale site that takes my money on a daily basis - mostly with kids clothes but I occasionally spot gems like this one. Do tell me if you purchase it!

Luxury Chinoiserie Lighting

Have you seen the recent amazingness from lighting purveyor Coleen & Company? This is the stuff my dreams are literally made of:

It's like living in a tole Chinoiserie dream! Top to bottom: Elsie Lantern, Tole Tent Semi Flush, & Scalloped Flush Mount.

It's hard to narrow in on a favorite here but I'll go ahead and do it - the Elsie. Woah. Now that is an attractive way to light up your life. But let's not overlook the adorable tassel detail on the Tole Tent Semi or the sweet white scallop border on the Scalloped Flush....really, really beautiful stuff. Luxury lighting that I can keep dreaming about as it's certainly not within my current reach. But the inspiration is free!

Chinoiserie Lamps

Grab a paper bag and prepare to hyperventilate.

Have you ever seen more beautiful lamps?

I surely have not. They are all from Carson & Co. and I simply want every single last one of them. The colors! The Chinoiserie motifs! The lamp shades! Serious works of art in a functional lighting vessel.

These are, ahem, luxury items but when you consider the unique beauty these would bring to a room I think they are likely worth every penny (about $1,000-$1,500 each). Gorgeous!

Catalog Picks: Grandinroad

Usually, a particular item will catch my eye in a catalog and it makes it to these virtual pages as one of my picks...but I recently spotted a slew of items in the Grandinroad (yup, Grandinroad) catalog that I felt the need to share.

Check 'em out:

Love, love, love these colors! So beautiful and the palette is so vast that you'll never be stuck...this is the kind of piece that will last a long time in your home because it will evolve with you.

Love the look and feel of these guys. The big one would be perfect over a dining table and the little ones would be great used in pairs or a group of three...maybe over a glam kitchen island?

Love the finish and the herringbone pattern. Would make the perfect bar in a living room with useful storage to boot.

And that's not all...definitely a couple more items caught my eye (especially rugs). If you haven't looked at Grandinroad lately, give it a whirl. And no, they are not paying me to say this.

That Green Lamp

I think lamps are a bit of a design secret weapon. When treated like a thoughtful design element, they can really make a space.

Now, the lamp isn't the only thing making a statement in this bedroom below by Phoebe Howard. The entire space is bananas, but that lamp sure does catch my eye:

Design by Phoebe Howard, Photo by Erica George Dines via Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

I love how she's used black and green together...that bed! But back to the lamp - I really love it and found this pair on Overstock for a steal of under $200 for both.

And I'm happy to report that a client loved the lamps as much I do so they are going in her bedroom. I've now seen them in person and they are so pretty - the green hue is spot on and the brass detail is a tasty little treat.

Catalog Pick: Bamboo Stick Sconce

I'm loving these bamboo stick sconces from Shades of Light because they are full of Chinoiserie flair but in a tailored, modern way:

They also come in 6 awesome colors (not pictured: white, coral & turquoise)...my favorite is the red, but I am speechless over this yellow. Why don't more people make yellow sconces? These are so incredibly lovely...I need to figure out where I can use a pair of these guys.

Check out the sconces here...I would opt for a mini-drum shade over the rattan-like ones - keeps the look tailored and not so tiki.

Jenna Stacked Ball Lamps

I have recently discovered that Overstock.com has majorly stepped up their game when it comes to colorful lamps. They have a TON that usually comes in a set of 2 for a fantastic price (and usually free shipping).

My newest favorite is the Jenna Stacked Ball lamp that comes in a set of 2 for about $150-$190 for the set, depending on color.

LOVE. And two for under $200! That is such a good deal and they come in a variety of lovely, sophisticated colors. My favorite application for these would be as buffet lamps. Their height and skinny profile would work well flanking a sideboard in a dining room.

Check out the color options here...

Catalog Pick: Pierced Moroccan Ceiling Light

The quest to find a good-looking ceiling light at a decent price is always a difficult one, right? And unless you live with tall ceilings (if you do, I'm jealous), you likely have tried to find something attractive that you won't hit your head on at some time or another.

So you'll understand why I was thrilled to see this Pierced Moroccan Metal Ceiling Light in the latest Shades of Light catalog. It's oh-so lovely but sits nice and close to your ceiling:

I'm sure this fixture throws the prettiest light patterns on the ceiling when turned on. And the best part? It's $99! That's reasonable for something attractive and different. I would LOVE to see a series of these used down a long hallway...imagine the look of sophisticated, glammed-up paper lanterns lighting your path. And I think the globe shape would also be great in a bathroom where you might want the aesthetic a little more tailored.

Do you like it? How would you use it? They also have it in white!

Sadie Sconce

I've mentioned a couple of times that I'm using sconces in the nursery. The room has a rather large alcove that fits our changing table perfectly but because of ceiling angles, it's quite a dark little nook.

I'm never one to pass up an opportunity to install decorative lighting so I sweetly asked Carter if he wouldn't mind installing some (hard-wired) wall sconces for me and he kindly obliged. And them my search started and of course everything I love costs eleventy billion dollars and now that we're in the home stretch of the room, my budget is essentially used up.

The look I wanted was similar to the Bryant Sconce from Circa Lighting:

The price point isn't outrageous, but still out of my budget. And then I saw this gorgeous bathroom from Lilly Bunn Weekes in Lonny and fell in love with the tailored look even more:

Well my search for budget lighting had me hit up Home Depot online and I was thrilled to come across this adorable little sconce:

It's the Sadie sconce from Hampton Bay and at $30 it was a great fit. And I actually liked it a little more because while it's still very tailored, I think its slight curves and ball tip/finial give it a sweeter disposition - perfect for the nursery.

My only dilemma was the finish, but we've found that several coats of Rustoleum's Metallic Brass spray paint gives it a nice golden tone that I can live with for the cost savings.

Now my other wish is to make the shades red (and you might recall me asking you about it) and I'm still not sure what a good option is. The shades are frosted glass so a little trickier to paint than fabric shades. Carter says painting them is a bad idea and it'll be hard to replace them with a different shade because they have a custom shape that works with the sconce. And remember that these are budget sconces so I don't really have room for anything other than just changing the shade it comes with. For now we're leaving them white...

Catalog Pick: Beckham Library Sconce

I find the Beckham Library Sconce from Ballard Designs to be very clever:

I am forever wanting to tuck sconces in places that are less than ideal for cords or wiring. This lovely little light is a clip-on, but looks so sophisticated don't you think?  I love how they have styled it here on a bookcase shelf. The price is great at $39 and it would look fantastic lacquered a fun color if you don't like the finish!

Coleen and Company Lighting

If money grew on trees, this AMAZING red tole sconce by Coleen & Company would make an appearance in our nursery:

It's called the Tole Tent Lantern Sconce and it embodies the look and feel I'm going for in that room. Ugh...it's STUNNING, isn't it?

And since we have a money tree in the backyard in this scenario, I might also get the Scalloped Lantern for the room's hanging fixture:

This fixture comes in SO many gorgeous colors including peacock, pink and tortoise.

I'm absolutely smitten with Coleen & Company's lighting. Just look at this Raj Lantern:

And they have a tortoise finish, which is awesome...seen here in the Scalloped Lantern Sconce:

But alas, these are fantasy pieces...not in any kind of price range I could actually afford. BOO. I am blessed beyond blessed in my life (beyond blessed) but sometimes I wish I had a stack of mad money to spend on beautiful items like this!
