Lucky vs Lonny

I have now drooled over the home of Lucky editor Marlien Rentmeester, designed by Hillary Thomas, twice - once via Lonny and recently via Lucky. Both times, my eyes have teared at the glory of its design.

You know I love a good table vignette and I really enjoyed seeing this particular space interpreted by both magazines:

Which arrangement do you prefer? Lucky's colorful/happy take or Lonny's serene/artful approach?

I love them both but I might sway a little more toward Lucky...

Paule Marrot

The latest issue of Lonny did a wee spread on Natural Curiosities and the print "Feathers" by Paule Marrot demanded my attention. And once I viewed the rest of the collection from this new-to-me French textile designer, I was completely hooked. What GORGEOUS works of art.

From Natural Curiosities:

"Natural Curiosities recently acquired the beautiful textile archives of French engraver, painter, and textile artist Paule Marrot (1902-1987). Early in her career, Marrot shifted her emphasis from painting to textiles to create expressive patterns from the 1920s through the 1950s. Marrot’s bold use of flowers, color and patterns reflect a compositionally modernist style classically associated with the Art Deco movement. Marrot’s artistic influences include the expressive writings of Marcel Proust, as evident in her work Du coté de chez Swann, based on Proust’s book In Search of Lost Time."

The offerings from NC appear to be prints of her textile work and while not inexpensive (Lonny quotes "Feathers" at around $2,500), they are certainly things of beauty.

Have you come across these prints before or seen Marrot's work elsewhere? I'd be interested to hear...

Wallpapered Ceiling

I have been contemplating the ceilings of my house lately. The majority are all white, and that fact is starting to annoy me. I love a detailed ceiling and I adore rooms where the ceiling gets lost. Like this one by Angie Hranowsky in the latest issue of Lonny.

The only room with a painted ceiling in our house is our bedroom, mainly because it has awkward slanted bits, like this space, and painting it one uniform color made it all flow and feel more open. It's a brilliant little trick, but I like that Angie pushed the envelope by wallpapering with a divine orange and pink Chinoiserie paper - so perfect for a little lady.

Friday Crush

Photo by Patrick Cline via Lonny

The most recent issue of Lonny features projects by two of my absolute most-favoritist designers - Angie Hranowsky and the duo of John Loecke/Jason Oliver Nixon. This space is by the latter, and the wall treatment is just awe-inspiring. I love the idea of setting up a small table and chairs in a living space - perfect for games, a light meal and conversation.

Happy weekend! See you Monday!

Friday Crush

image via lonnymag.com

The latest Lonny is out. I've gotten through half and, per the usual, it has not disappointed. This vignette (designed by George Nunno and Jon Maroto in a little "how-to" section) caught my eye this Friday. My beloved orange, the use of black and the modern painting toward the back are all working in divine unison. You know I love a good table vignette.

Hope you have a crazy good weekend...we'll be celebrating Carter's birthday. See you Monday!

Friday Crush

Photo by Patrick Cline via Lonny

My mind is clearly in home office mode. And I can't stop thinking about pink - for my office, but also in general - I'm trying to find spots to add some pink to my house. I'm also wearing a pink shirt today.

The home office of Frank Muytjens featured in Lonny is incredibly handsome. I'm in love with the desk chair and I actually own a similar one. The jade green elevates the look of this one. And the pop of pink is stellar...just what the whole ensemble needs.

I have GOT to work on my office this weekend. Hope you tackle weekend projects on your new 2011 to-do list. See you Monday!

Friday Crush

Photo by Patrick Cline via Lonny

Let's be clear that I'm crushing on the entire Lonny issue. But this picture sent my heart racing into perfect Christmas territory. I adore the color scheme, the tree, the ribbon, that chair. Everything is beautiful. Even the radiator looks chic. Designed by Eileen Kathryn Boyd.

We have a packed weekend with holiday soirees! I'm very excited to spend time with lots of friends, co-workers and family to toast the holiday. Have a great weekend, grab those last minute gifts, and see you Monday!

A Floating Chinoiserie Bar

I had a mini breakdown and my stress level elevated as I tried picking my favorite set of images from the latest issue of Lonny for today's post. The issue is amazing. And that is an understatement. If you love turquoise, you'll love this issue.

Feeling overwhelmed, I will just share this chic idea from the home of Angele Parlange. A floating Chinoiserie bar:

Image by Patrick Cline via Lonny

We know I'm obsessed with bars, and this has to be one of my favorites. Perfect for a small room where floor space might be tight, but wall space abounds. And the Chinoiserie flair completes it. Bar accessories, a cool mirror or artwork and some treats for guests to munch on as they walk by - noting this for future use.

Go. Lonny yourself.

Manly Chinoiserie. The bar of a gentleman. Courtesy of John Robshaw via Lonny. Did you notice the Greek key trim? My fascination with bar vignettes continues...

The new issue of Lonny is out today. Seems like I'm always an issue behind, but I love every moment of every page. Get it while it's hot.

Carter is running a marathon this weekend. As in 26.2 miles of non-stop motion. With sweat. And pain. I can't fathom it. And he can't fathom spending 6 hours in a fabric store. And to be honest, by the time I'm done with a fabric run, I have likely traversed 26.2 miles myself. With sweat. And delight.

I will be cheering him on as he completes this feat of strength this weekend! Hope you all have wonderful weekends...see you Monday!

Lonnymag Dot Com

Did you see the news that Lonny has a new website?

Browsing through their archive of pictures (our favorite part) is a bit easier now and they have also added a blog, which I'm sure will be a good read. I see a couple of quirks, but I think the site is moving in the right direction toward becoming a website resource (and not just an online mag).

As a web designer, I know user feedback on a new site is really important. What do you think of the redesign? Any feedback for the Lonny team?

p.s. In other news, Rue is set to launch today, which you may want to check out if you haven't heard. And Anthology is a new print publication on the design beat getting buzz.

Tuesday Crush

Photo by Patrick Cline via lonnymag.com

Design by: Callie Jenschke

Why I like it:  Pure and simple, those black and white glasses. They stopped me in my tracks. But, I'll admit that the whole arrangement is inspiring - I love looking at bar arrangements. Are you like me and find a whole lot of inspiration in a close-up photo like this of a room's detail, just as much as a whole room? I love studying photos like this one - all the small details are just wonderful.

Good Loot Comes to Those Who Wait

I've been jonesing for some wheat sconces for a while (I want to say something like 9 months). Knowing that my fireplace mantel would one day be complete, I always had the thought of finding a great mirror and flanking it with some big sconces.

In deciding what these sconces should be like, I always turned to those jazzy coral sconces Ruthie Sommers used in her living room that we saw in domino:

Photo by Melanie Acevedo via domino

What I liked most about the sconces wasn't their coral-ness (although very nice) but actually how they projected from the wall. I liked that they were sculptural and quirky.

As I dove into a search for a pair of sconces to call my own, somewhere along the way, I fell in love with the wheat motif. I think the first time the wheat theme called to me was when I found an awesome pair of vintage white tole sconces on Etsy for a steal of $35. I debated and debated - still not fully confident that I could put large, sculptural sconces in our living room (perhaps too grand/traditional for the space). So as I thought and thought...someone else bought them. And of course, as soon as they did, I totally regretted my decision and doubled my efforts looking for wheat sconces.

A great example of these sconces via Lonny:

Photo by Patrick Cline via lonnymag.com

So, it's been months since my Etsy darlings passed me by and I've been scouring Etsy, eBay, flea markets, etc. to find a good vintage pair (within my budget - always key)...and finally, it was my day yesterday! And perfect timing since I'm making fireplace mirror decisions.

Behold my loot:

I found them on eBay for $35 (and a respectable shipping fee) - the seller had relisted them because the previous buyer hadn't paid up (and I had actually missed them the first go around). Woohoo! These are actually better than the Etsy pair because they are gold, which is what I originally wanted.

I think they might work well next to my free mirror, which I will paint gold to match. I think the traditional motif will work nicely against the geometrics and color of my living room.

Once again, patience wins. I need to remember that...

Papier Mache Menagerie

So, I'm totally lovin' on Ellie Somerville's apartment in the current issue of Lonny. It's completely normal for me to go back through issues over and over again to look at spaces, and I'm finding that this go 'round, Ellie's is the space I'm studying. It's the perfect bachelorette pad!

For sure, one of my favorite elements is that whimsical papier mache rhino head from Anthro hanging above her Parsons desk...it's the perfect touch of safari/whimsy/I-don't-take-myself-too-seriously/art:

Love it. I hopped over to Anthro (via the uber convenient link) and checked out their other papier mache animal bust offerings (never thought I'd write those words together), and I like the options:

 a gazelle
(i think she's my favorite)

I thoroughly enjoy a touch of the unexpected in a room, don't you? Happy surprises. And Mr. Rhino in Ellie's room fits the bill.

Hmmm...I bet all four of these might make a cool collection on a wall...

And on a side note, do you have fond memories of papier mache? I remember loving the stuff...all of that slimy newspaper...I was a messy kid - I had an affinity for mud, slush, clay. Papier mache ranked high among my favorite camp activities.

Friday Crush

Photograph by Patrick Cline

My favorite image from the current issue of Lonny - Ashley Putnam's Houston home. I've been in fits looking at this house...I want it. I'm especially impressed by the use of so many dark tones, and yet the house feels open, young and welcoming - quite the balancing act. I know we've heard it all across blogland, but this issue of Lonny is super good - I'll be "leafing" through it a couple more times before I'm over it.

We've got quite the busy social calendar this weekend, so there will be little rest but lots of fun. Hope you all have a stellar weekend...see you Monday!

Friday Crush

Photo by Patrick Cline, design by Lizzie Bailey via lonnymag.com

I can't believe that I have yet to post on February's issue of Lonny (and the new issue is right around the corner). It's just a symptom of how nutty bananas these past couple of months have been - I have a STACK of shelter mags that are sitting on my bedside table pleading with me to read them...I'm a wee bit behind.

But, enough of my whining...this is my favorite image from the current Lonny issue. It's the NYC home of Lizzie Bailey, and although I was drooling over all pages in this issue, I was especially envious of her digs. Her home feels so light and airy, but her furniture and accent pieces are such a mix of color, texture and style - I love it. This picture in particular grabbed me because I have a very similar little spot in my living room - a focal point parsons table - and it has been a blank canvas for a year now...I'll be studying this pic for some inspiration.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend - see you Monday!!

Via Lonny: Breezy Chinoiserie

The latest issue of Lonny hit virtual newsstands last week. I have not been able to read the voluminous edition cover to cover as of yet, but in my initial skim, this feature totally caught my eye.

The California home of interior designer Vanessa De Vargas is a study in breezy, beachy Chinoiserie. I adore how she uses a backdrop of white and neutrals to showcase punchy colors and patterns - an approach near and dear to my heart.

I found her home totally divine and in line with my aesthetic. And her tips for decorating on a budget were right on point. JC Penney is a great resource for budget-friendly decor finds...and you know I love a good inspiration board...

Enjoy!

Meet Lonny

I went through the five stages of grief when I received the postcard announcing the end of Cottage Living. HOW could they pull the plug on my lifeline to all things quaint and cozy?  And then there was the end of domino...it was too much.

Actually, it was a cruel reminder that the economy affects everything - even great shelter magazines.

Those that share my love of interior decoration cling to these publications as much more than words on paper - they are talismans guiding us with knowledge and know-how that we can apply to our world. They are tools that serve a purpose beyond light reading. You'll never see us toss an issue.

So when I heard about Lonny, I was beyond intrigued. It was to be a design magazine, kinda similar to domino, but in an online platform. Wait, what? A web-based design magazine? Ummm....yes, please.

image from Lonny magazine

Lonny is the creation of fabric designer and blogger Michelle Adams (Rubie Green; MA Belle)and professional photographer Patrick Cline (Brand-Arts). He's a Londoner, she's a New Yorker - hence Lonny. Both saw a need for a publication that would demystify design and put decorative ideas into real terms (much like the late domino where Michelle had worked).

They also understood the hurdles and limitations of traditional print so decided to create Lonny as an online venture. The expansive platform would allow them to create in-depth stories with lots of photography without worry of page count. Not to mention that the Web would effortlessly sync users to the items shown in the magazine - do you like Kate Simpson's towels? or Grace Bonney's wall hook? Click on it!...and you are taken to the product online. Brilliant.

So Sunday morning, before Carter got up, I snuck downstairs, made myself a cup of coffee, curled up in our big chair with my laptop and clicked, clicked, clicked.

I was delighted to see there were almost 200 pages to get through. The issue had a whopping seven featured homes (all in or near New York) showcasing different styles. I was especially interested in seeing the homes of Eddie Ross and Grace Bonney - they did not disappoint. The writing of the magazine (by Shawn Gauthier) is very familiar and straightforward - makes you feel comfortable as you flip the pages and read about the people whose homes you are viewing.

Grace Bonney's bedroom

Lonny is peppered with some fashion pieces - fashion design and interior design tend to trend similarly so they are a natural combination, but I like that fashion was used as an accent with the focus staying on interiors.

One page that I look forward to seeing developed is the how-to page - for a DIY-er like me, I'm always interested in learning about achieving a look or creating something unique on my own. The page had good ideas, but for the audience that I think the magazine appeals to, it could be a heartier section (maybe profiling one good project each issue?).

But the meat of the mag was certainly in the features. Such different takes on interiors (and exteriors) with great accompanying photography - Kate Simpson's sophisticated beach house, Eddie Ross and Jaithan Kochar's farmhouse, a Manhattan apartment styled by Ron Marvin and another by Carolina Irving (her own home), Grace Bonney's Brooklyn apartment, a renovation by Laurent Girard and Leonora Mahle, and the gardens and home of Deborah Needleman. Two hundred pages are a lot to take in, so I'm only hitting the highlights. If you are a shelter pub fiend visit lonnymag.com. The premiere issue was delightful and I expect it to get better as it makes its entrée into the design world.

Below is my favorite image from the issue. It's of Kate Simpson's bathroom (she was a Senior Market Editor for domino). Have I told you how much I looove wallpaper? Well I do, and this one is divine. And those towels! The monogram is so Chinoiserie (I of course clicked on those puppies and was taken here). Enjoy Lonny!

UPDATE: Eddie Ross' blog is profiling Lonny from his perspective having been featured. He also includes some pictures of Michelle and Patrick in action - fun to see. Read his post here...
