Wheatland

Thank you, Garden & Gun, for introducing me to this stunning Virginia home - called Wheatland - on the Rappahannock River. Totally and completely breathtaking:

Photos by Patricia Lyons

That is some jaw-dropping stuff, folks...traditional beauty. I love the colors used throughout and the home's architecture is so beautiful nestled among the trees.

Completely dreamy, right? Check out all the photos here...

Recliners

Now these are recliners I can get behind. Or lay on.

Design by Diamond Baratta, image via anthonybaratta.com

Are you generally against recliners but have had to wage the recliner battle at home? Or at least the comfy chair battle? Comfy and stylish are not mutually exclusive. A happy medium can be found. Not to say these chairs would be as comfortable as a huge, squishy recliner but they look pretty great for lounging and look pretty bomb in this room. That mirror, wall color and carpet sing with the chair upholstery. Have you ever seen such interesting chairs? Imagine when that fire is roaring...

Vintage Hermes for Your Wall

Apparently my theme this week is see it, like it, let me tell you where to get it. Those are always fun posts.

Love everything about this vignette below, as photographed by Porter Hovey for the book Heirloom Modern, except for maybe the suitcase trunks (never really got on that train). But I especially love the look of the framed scarf. The feminine, vintage quality is stunning against the other quirky elements making up the arrangement.

Did a little digging and found that the scarf is the "Regina" pattern by Hermes. And you can find it on eBay like this one:

Framing scarves is nothing new but I think pairing a vintage scarf like this with modern elements is a really fresh take on the look. And your scarf need not be a $300 Hermes situation...vintage scarves are so easy to come by on Etsy and eBay in every pattern, color and price point available. And their large scale make for a great wall-filler.

Friday Crush

Yowza! This is magnificent. Maybe not for my house...unless I lived in a crazy mansion...but PERFECT for what looks like a hotel. I found this guy on Pinterest and it credits Hotel Monaco but I'm unsure of which location it is. Anyone know? And look at those floor lamps. They are table lamps but in floor size! Brilliant. But back to the pagoda...wow. And against that red wall. Stunning.

Ya'll, I have been sick FOREVER. I'm going on two weeks and I need to shake this. And it doesn't help that one day it's 2 degrees and then this weekend it will be 60. Seriously? I have lots to do in 2014 and I'd like to get to it. Have a fab weekend. See you next week!

Friday Crush

(Anybody know the image source?)

Now that the holidays are over, and after nursing a week-long case of laryngitis, I'm ready for a whole lot of this. Pretty fires in a pretty fireplace. Today's temperatures are in the 20s so after a day at work, I'll be ready to curl up in front of our own fireplace for a weekend of rest.

Hope your new year is off to a fantastic start! See you next week!

Friday Crush

Image via House & Garden (anyone know designer/photog?)

One day, I shall be disciplined and will paint my walls white. And then I will layer on the texture, color and pattern to create a rich space such as this one. I am digging this look...so warm and inviting despite the white backdrop. And there's that tobacco/cognac tone again...love it so much. Especially with pink.

I absolutely live for this time of year. I'm in my happy place from now until the New Year. We have a busy, fun weekend ahead. Hope you do too...enjoy it and see you next week!

Rustic Pink

I really love how well a beautiful does of pink works in a rustic interior.

Exposed wood beams next to hot pink make a fetching combination. Staring at these images, I also think that what makes both looks memorable are the white walls - the contrast of brown and pink really pop when the walls are kept white. I've come to love white walls in rooms like these - I'm always one for paint, but I keep seeing beautiful, colorful, rooms with white walls that blow me away!

Hope you had a fantastic weekend!

Peach

Photo by Laurey W. Glenn via Southern Living, Design by Annie Werden*

Peach is one of those colors, along with maroon and hunter green, that has not seen its heyday since 1983. Or is that too harsh an assessment? I know I tend to stay away from it. But then I saw this image, with all its freshness and whatnot, and started to see the merits of this apricot hue.

I absolutely LOVE that piece of art against the white wall and fireplace. Peach + white + taupe is quite the chic combination. And with brass accessories (and a shout-out to those urns in the windows), well, it's good. Really good.

I shouldn't be surprised that I'm coming around to the virtue of peach - it is, after all, what you get when you mix Orange and Pink.

*UPDATE: Reader Kristin let me know that the pic is from Baltimore designer Annie Werden's home, as seen in the March 2011 Southern Living (how on earth did I miss it when I looked at the issue??) And the painting is "The Cotton Candy Machine" by her aunt Martha Dodd. Thanks Kristin!

Pink Walls

Photography by Rene Stoeltie published in Veranda

Pink walls can look amazing, as seen in this room by Roberto Bergero, published in April's issue of Veranda. The bold color against the intricate white molding is striking. Though I don't think I could go this bold in my own home, I am always drawn to strong hues of pink. To me, this particular shade of hot pink is executed so well because it is balanced with very traditional elements, which keep the look modern. Beautiful!

Hope you had a lovely 4th of July.

Friday Crush

I love the balance of masculine + feminine in this room. The rich, neutral tones are the perfect backdrop to the colors of the modern painting. And I love the deep, glossy floors contrasted with the white textured rug. Modern, artsy, cool, etc. From Massucco Warner Miller.

I've been bitten by the house projects bug again. I've taken a nice loooong break from house to-dos, but I'm itching to get some items complete. Up for possible completion this weekend: re-painting the main floor bathroom (for the 3rd time). Hope it gets done. See you Monday!

Friday Crush

Photo by Isa Salazar via Lonny

Pink and gold, combined, are a supreme force. And executed on this fireplace at the Kips Bay Showhouse by Amanda Nisbet is a prime example of said power. I don't decorate enough with pink.

Have a wonderful weekend - hope you relax and/or get a lot done. See you Monday!

AO Christmas 2010: Nutcracker Mantel

My house. As we speak. Nutcrackertastic.

Allow me to gush over my nutrackers. I adore them. This is the first Christmas that I have a fireplace mantel, so I *might* have gone a little nutty (pun intended) rounding up new additions to my collection for display.

I also love to decorate with poinsettias. They were my "theme" many years ago, so I had lots of glittery stems in storage. I found they were perfect for bringing out the red in the little guys, especially on display inside my blue and white chinese porcelain.

One thing I opted to do this year was to trash all of my faux garland. We bought a fresh garland at Home Depot, along with a fresh wreath (and our tree, of course) and we opted for only fresh greenery this year, and I'm a total fan. Don't think I'll go faux again (except maybe outside where durability is key).

Carter likes the stockings. Our old stockings were ruffled, polka dot, and there may have been some leopard print involved. He is happy to have this nutcracker pair hanging from his handiwork.

Tomorrow, the tree.

Friday Crush

Did everyone catch Jennifer Boles' curated sale of books on OKL this week? It had some fantastic offerings (which were all sold out when I got there). But, what caught my eye most was this fireplace picture at the top of the page. WOAH. I think it is Jennifer's actual fireplace, no? I'm going to assume that is an insane paint treatment. I couldn't stop staring at it. It's lacquered peacock with a hint of animal print - and it looks incredibly timeless.

I'm going somewhere very fun tomorrow and I promise a fantastic blog post with pictures on Monday - I'm sure you'll love it. Follow me on twitter @aestheticoiseau tomorrow as I'll share a sneak peek or two of where I am. Have a great weekend - see you Monday!

Fireplace Mantel is Done!

I'm so thrilled - our fireplace mantel and bookcases are complete and they are everything I ever wanted and more!

Please excuse sconces that aren't quite hung properly - I just threw them up there on some old hooks to see how they'd look, and I like them!

And just for a refresher, this is what the space looked like before we moved in:

Quite the difference, right? Complete props go to Carter and his dad for building such a gorgeous part of our home. It looks so fantastic in person, the pictures are not doing it justice. Carter painstakingly primed, sanded and painted the mantel and bookshelves - 4 coats in all, and the results are beautiful.

Of course, now I'm staring at a huge blank canvas, including the large expanse of wall above our built-ins, and my mind is racing with how I will fill the space. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.

Progress pics of this project are here and here.

More Fireplace Progress Pictures

Here are some more progress pictures of our fireplace mantel and bookcases! My father-in-law has been a trooper and spent yesterday finishing up the project. When I came home yesterday, I almost fell over...the finished product looks incredible!

These are the times when there are no words to thank someone for putting SO much time, effort and care into building something so beautiful for your home. THANK YOU JERRY!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to get a coat of white paint on the mantel and bookcases to tie them in with our existing trim! That will be our project for this coming weekend.

I'm a VERY happy camper...and owe it all to Carter and his dad. Bravo gentlemen!

Progress Pictures

Today's post doesn't have the usual eye candy...unless you dig construction photos. But, these photos are eye candy to me because my dream of having a proper fireplace mantel, plus bookcase built-ins, is coming true!

My father-in-law spent the weekend with us to help Carter tackle this project in our living room, and the guys got a ton done in two days.

Here is what we were starting with - a very thick moulding around our brick hearth:

I thought about the mantel design for months with different concept sketches and decorative ideas, but wasn't coming up with anything great - until I came across this image on Flickr. It had the simple lines I was after, plus the bonus of showing the mantel tied in with low bookcases:

So, we used this photo for inspiration - and after some adjustments and dimension-sketching to make it work for our actual space, we they got started.

Here are some progress pictures:

By last night, the mantel was finished and the left-side bookcase was over halfway done! I'm thrilled with how it is coming along, and I think Carter has learned enough from his dad to finish up the job. Woohoo!

The mantel and the top of the bookcases are nice and wide, so I'll have a field day decorating those. And we'll finally have a spot for family photo frames, books and all the little items that make a space feel lived in (and I can stop staring at a big blank wall).

I'll post some update pictures when it's all installed!

My Mantel Mission

My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to design our fireplace mantel.

My father-in-law is heading up from South Carolina to help us with our main level bath this weekend. Time allowing, he will also take a crack at building the mantel.

Sooo...I haven't exaaactly designed a fireplace in the past. Ever. But, I know what I like, so that is always a good place to start. I know I want something simple, and white, but with a bit of flair...of the Chinoiserie variety. Now before you go thinking that I'm going to emblazon a dragon across my hearth, do keep in mind that I understand the term "resale". So, I'll try to keep the flair subdued since this IS a permanent structure that we are adding to the living room.

Here is the current state of our fireplace and living room:

So far, we've tackled paint, molding and furniture. Our poor little mantel doesn't give me a ton to work with, but it does have a white brick surround, which Carter and I both love. And we plan to paint the brick portion that extends onto the floor white as well - that will look dynamite against our dark-ish hardwood floors.

I don't know the correct terms for parts of a fireplace/mantel. I want the "top part" to use the same crown molding that we use in the living room to offer some continuity to the space.

Below the crown (I believe the area is called the "frieze)" comes the flair. I will once again thank John Loecke whose dining room profiled in Cottage Living* has been a little treasure-trove of information. He used a trim on his chair rail that was just lovely - and the mag divulged that I could own that decorative trim through a company called Decorators Supply.

After some deliberation, I have chosen this trim below to go across the front of the mantel. It is six inches tall, and thus will provide the chutzpah that I seek. Painted white, it will blend nicely with the rest of the mantel whilst keeping it interesting.

The rest of the fireplace shall stay simple. Simple white legs that will surround the white brick hearth. I might do a little more research to see if I can find a nice clean shape to show my father-in-law.

I have scoured the interweb looking for fireplace pictures. Perhaps these pretty examples will inspire your own mantel mission:

image from Mrs. Howard (the store)

This mantel is the closest I have found to what I want, and it is of course a Howard creation. This one is WAY more ornate that what we'll do, but it does show what I'm planning with the decorative trim - although ours will just be horizontal, and not down the legs. But you get the idea...

I heart the room above on so many levels. I think I first saw it in Cottage Living. Oh dear, it's amazing. And I do enjoy the fireplace.

This image above shows my eventual vision of having low bookcases built on either side of the fireplace.

*Special AO Note - Please forgive me that I have not shared the pictures of John Loecke's dining room that I keep taunting you with...but I'm saving them! There will be a whole post just on that room.  I'll bump it up for next week so that I don't keep you dears in suspense. It will be worth the wait...unless of course you know the room of which I speak, in which case, you are envisioning it already...
