Colored Canvas

I remember having a conversation with my mother-in-law over Thanksgiving re: modern art. Since childhood, I was incredibly disinterested in abstract art (well, art in general, but that's a different story). But the modern pieces in particular held no appeal.

But now, my preference is abstract art. Realistic subject matter gets in the way of seeing emotion played out purely with color. No eyes, no smiles, no boats or homes...just pure color. And being a complete color nut, brightly painted canvases bring me joy. A recent change in my tastes that I am welcoming with open arms.

The above canvas is the perfect example - "O Sing of Summer" available on Etsy via shop Mossmottle. I'm so thankful for Etsy! I love being able to purchase art directly from its creator.

  1. I have always preferred abstract to realistic subject matter. I love the dreamy quality of abstract, color and unique use of brush strokes. I appreciate both styles, but my eye has always been drawn to color, not that realistic painting lack color, but color is the focus on abstract. Great post and love this painting! I checked out her profile and she is located in the Peak District in England...I lived in London as a child and quite often went to the Peak District on holiday. Glad to see you have come over to the colorful side ;)!

  5. I agree with what you said. I have also gravitated to modern art in the last few years - seems the older I get, the more I like it...hmm! I love the way one's imagination tells the story, that it isn't literal but rather whatever you interpret it to be and that can be different for every person.

  9. I know what you mean about being drawn to modern abstract art the older you get - if I'm really honest it's because when I was growing up I used to look at abstract art and think 'I could do that!', but now of course I realise how wrong I was! This piece is gorgeous, I'll be sure to keep an eye on the etsy store..

  12. I was never a fan of abstract art, until I took a fine art class at school last semester. We were required to produce a piece of art (in under a week). It was then that I decided that I wasn't going to be able to create a realistic piece of art, so I went with an abstract piece, and got a score of 99% on it. :)

  14. Hi Daniela! Thank you so much for featuring my work! I really appreciate your kind support, enthusiasm and the encouraging comments from others too! Very much agree about the direct contact with the artist; I hope it's the way of the future - just one important way of many - as both sides benefit from this.
Here are two blogs set up to promote the work of fine artists on etsy - well worth keeping an eye on:
